Small-scale studies of corrosion mechanisms in-situ

Abstract:

Corrosion causes extensive damage to our society destroying substantial properties and lives due to catastrophic failures. Application of passive alloys is an effective way to reduce the corrosion rate and the subsequent damage. However, passive layers can be subjected to localized breakdown and consequently pitting corrosion leading to loss of the substrate mechanical integrity and failures. The passive layer breakdown and initiation of the pitting corrosion are dynamic phenomena in the presence of the corrosive environments initiated at the nm- and atomic-scales. Therefore, the onset of pitting corrosion is difficult to detect. Moreover, a fundamental understanding of corrosion inhibition caused by the interaction of inhibitors to metal surfaces is still missing. In-situ corrosion studies at the small scale helps to understand both the pitting corrosion and inhibition mechanisms. To do so, new experimental strategies are demanded to overcome the various technical obstacles preventing real-time corrosion monitoring at the small-scale resolution. This will involve the fabrication of novel delicate liquid cells integrated with high resolution tools and new ways of post-processing collected image data to obtain small-scale analyses.
